You can fence with fences if you like but the expected and "normal" way to "fence" is either constructing a barrier around a property or belonging(s), or competing with epees (sports swords).
Fencing with epees held backwards is wrong, fencing using epees as clubs instead of swords is wrong, this is just not the normal way to do it. Which makes it improper, not wrong. Funny as hell though!
